Is it safe to go swimming in the rain?

With awareness and the right precautions, swimming in the rain can be a truly magical and safe experience. It is an opportunity to embrace the moment, but no two experiences are alike and it’s important to remember that swimming in open water during wet weather is not without its risks. English open-water coach Sue Lord says: ‘Being prepared for each swim is vital. Always assess your swim area and conditions before taking the plunge, and never swim alone.

This advice is reiterated by Ashley Jones, Swim England Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Manager: ‘Swimming in the rain is not generally a problem for confident open-water swimmers, and many actually enjoy the experience. However, there are a number of things to bear in mind before venturing out into the water during unsettled weather conditions. Preparation is the key to ensure you stay safe when swimming outdoors, and knowing your route, the temperature of the water and what the weather has done, is doing and what it is forecast to do are key considerations.’

The liberating potential of wet weather swimming

When it rains, there’s usually a tendency to cover up, open an umbrella or rush inside. But you don’t have to worry about wet clothes or your appearance when you’re swimming in the rain. Whether there’s a light shower or a sudden downpour, you’re not going to get any wetter if you’re in the water!

Sue says: ‘Many people moan when the heavens open but to us swimmers, swimming in the rain adds another gratifying dimension. The darker, moody skies and the sound of the raindrops on the water, bouncing off the surface and your skin, is so relaxing and mesmerising. All your troubles just ooze away, allowing you time to reset from all stresses.’

For anyone having a bad day or feeling low in mood, being immersed in such a way can be powerful and transformational. It can bring about a feeling of serenity that lingers long after emerging from the water.
